Maulāna Hussain Ali's Concept of Abrogation in the Qur’an
Abstract
Molāna Hussain Ali (Alwāni, Punjabi, Naqshbandi, Hanafi, Deobandi) 1867-1944 A.D./ 1283-1363 A.H. was one of the renowned scholars and commentators of Qurʼan in recent past. He devoted his life for the study and propagation of Qur’anic teachings. His exertive insights into the Qur’anic knowledge has reflected in some of his unique researches that sets him apart from his contemporary scholars. His critique about the “Abrogation in Qur’an” is a valuable understanding/ study that is worth sharing. Former commentators (متقدمين) of Qur’an take “Abrogation” in its broader sense and consider many verses of Qur’an abrogated due to the slightest hint of abrogation. Therefore, early commentators title more than 500 verses in Qur’an as abrogated. Later commentators narrowed the scope of Abrogation down and classified abrogation as “the change in the rule of a Qur’anic verse rather than complete abrogation”. The change/ relaxation in the term definition allowed Imam Sayūti to declare only twenty of the Qur’anic verses abrogated. Furthermore, Imam Shah Wali Ullah’s exerted insight reduced the number to only five (5) and explicated for the 15 verses that were previously considered abrogated by Sayūti. While quoting the 5 abrogated verses from Shah Wali Ullah, Molāna Mufti Shafi R.A. desires of a scholar that can even explicate for these verses and can reduce the number down to zero. Molāna Hussain Ali, by his contemplation, exertive thinking, and vast study of the Qur’anic teachings and perhaps by inspiration (الہام) came up with the explanation of the said verses that they fell out of the stringent definition/ scope of Abrogation. This article sheds light upon the Molāna Hussain Ali’s study and contemplation of these 5 verses, that is not only unique but also very valuable in Qur’anic studies.
