Features of Political Poetry in a Poem of Lawan Bashir Zaria: A Study of the Thematic Structure

This study examines the role of political poetry in shaping public discourse, influencing social movements, and inspiring collective action. Through a critical analysis of poems from various historical and cultural contexts, this research highlights the ways in which political poetry challenges dominant narratives, amplifies marginalized voices, and fosters empathy and solidarity. This research studies and analyses the political poetry in the poem of Lawan Bashir Zaria, a study of the thematic structure in to a preface and three sections, the preface introduces the concept of political poetry as well as the aspect of Lawan Bashir’s life. Whereas the sections deal with political themes in the poem under study viz: 1-Depicting peoples suffering. 2-Depicting ruler’s oppression and their betrayal of their people, 3- Calling for national unity. The findings demonstrate that political poetry possesses a unique capacity to capture the complexities of human experience, to articulate dissent and resistance, and to envision alternative futures. Ultimately, this study argues that political poetry remains a vital and powerful tool for social change, offering a platform for voices that might otherwise be silenced or marginalized.
